The One GMC Step That Trips Up So Many IMGs—Let’s Talk About It

You’ve passed PLAB, sorted your documents, and you're ready to apply for GMC registration… but then Fitness to Practise throws a curveball. It’s more than just saying you’re a “safe doctor”—you have to prove it. Many IMG applications get delayed at this stage due to missing documents, unclear work histories, or incomplete declarations. Here's what you need to know before you hit "submit":

  • ✅ Declare all medical and non-medical work from the last 5 years

  • 📍 Gaps between roles should be <28 days (even study or travel must be mentioned!)

  • 📄 You’ll need a Certificate of Good Standing from every country where you’ve held medical registration

  • ❗ Commonly missed: EPIC number, translations, employer references

  • ⏳ You have 90 days to finish the application once started—so prep first!
