Before landing your first NHS job or even completing GMC registration, many IMGs consider a UK clinical attachment. But is it still essential—or just nice to have? In a system with no centralised application and limited formal programmes, finding a placement takes effort and strategy. But the rewards? They could be career-changing.
🔍 Here’s what it really takes to get one:
• Cold-emailing consultants from NHS hospital websites
• Calling switchboards and departments directly
• Using IMG networks, friends, and alumni for referrals
• Applying to Trust-run programmes (but prepare early—spots go fast)
Once you're in, don't waste the opportunity:
✅ Get involved in ward rounds, audits, and MDTs
✅ Ask to write notes and observe key procedures
✅ Let your enthusiasm show—your next job offer could be one conversation away!
